TCC 1Xl 2017 Season Summary

Author: TCC, 12/11/17

1Xl after dramatic 20/20 win vs East Lancs.

A full summary of the 1Xl 2017 season!

With a largely settled side all season, TCC 1Xl saw vast improvement from the 6th placed finish in the 2016 campaign, moving up to 3rd in 2017, behind league newcomers Darwen and Clitheroe. We also reached the the first ever Lancashire League T20 Finals Day, after being runners up in 2016. We reached the QF of the Worsley Cup, unfortunately losing out to Darwen.

A minutes silence being held for much loved TCC member Miriam Claxton.

Skipper Andrew Sutcliffe reflects, " The 2017 season was an enjoyable one on the field as we showed some real progression as a side.  At some point in the season every one who played contributed to us winning games of cricket and as a squad we looked stronger, as a few of our younger players progressed to make some 1st XI appearances following good performances in the 2nd’s.

To finish 3rd in the League and have a T20 finals day appearance shows we have played good and consistent cricket but have fallen short to the top two teams.  If only we had expanded 12 months later!  Our professional this year, Kelly Smuts, was top drawer on the field and helped us be competitive all season after he got us off to a flyer with some serious runs in the first 6 games, his double century, taking the TCC record high score for a professional, was a seriously special knock at home to Enfield."

"Kristian Garland had an excellent first half of the season and his runs, along with the professional, led us over the line in a handful of games in Phase 1 fixtures, as well as having a solid season behind the stumps.  His knock at Burnley away (53) being the stand out for me against a top team.

Benjamin Pearson delivered at the top of the order and finished as our highest amateur run scorer, he is capable of scoring consistently big runs for the club.  Benjy has always showed a lot of drive and promise, and this year he delivered in some big games for us.  He had an excellent season for an 18 year-old with his performance at Lowerhouse away (86*) being his stand out knock of the season.

My favourite individual performance of the season was Freddie Priestley in the T20 quarter final at Rishton.  His knock of 75 off 45 balls with 6 maximum’s was brutal! We hope for more of the same in the future!"

We also caught up with 2017 professional Kelly Smuts and got his thoughts on the campaign, "I loved my time at TCC. Obviously having sub pro'd for the club in the past, I knew a little bit about the club and team, so I knew it was a good club. Everyone at the club made my wife and I feel so welcome and looked after us really well.

I think it was a successful season for us. I knew we had lots of potential, but from where the club was the previous season, I think it was a big improvement. We played really good cricket in the league and T20s and I feel that we can comfortably say that we were the 3rd best team by quite a way. If we are honest with ourselves, Darwen and Clitheroe were a step ahead of us, but we were way better than teams finishing below us.

I think I'd be an idiot to not say my double ton in the first game of the season as my favourite moment on the field.  Noisy's (Graham Lalor) 5fer against Darwen in the Cup was also a highlight of mine. I know it was in a losing cause, but he took 5 wickets in no time to give us a sniff! Most memorable moment off the field....can I say our water football game against Bacup? Technically it's on the field but it wasn't cricket haha!

Even though I won't be returning in 2018, I think the team will continue their improvement and have another good season. Everyone will be returning a more experienced player which will only improve the strength of the squad."

Skipper Andrew Sutcliffe continues: "Matt Collins & Graham Lalor led from the front with the ball showing consistency all season and discipline that really did make us hard to beat.  They set the perfect example to every other player and junior coming through about knowing your role and sticking to a game plan.  I know that they can bowl half of our overs in a game and go for less than 80 runs week in and week out and it makes us hard to beat.  They have both been excellent recruits and I am sure they will stay for a long time to come.

A lot of our hard work is paying off, with our seasoned campaigners and our developing youngsters (Benjamin Pearson, Hamza Ali, Kai Abbas & Freddie Priestley), we are in a strong position to go again next year and we have a solid pre season set up to hit the ground running again in 2018."
